Election Day 2008: PA Voters Forced to Vote Provisionally

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, registered voters have found their names missing from local poll books. Some think that the local books are out of date, some think that the Philadelphia City Commission was swamped and couldn't get all of the paper work done. But, in any case, these votes probably won't be counted tonight, which, despite the sky-high turnout, could have major consequences for the Obama campaign.

If McCain Wins, Obama Supporters Predict . . .

At an Obama rally in Columbus, Ohio, ANP asked Obama supporters how they would feel if they wake up on November 5th to find that John McCain has won the election. Produced with Patricia Foulkrod, director of The Ground Truth.

If Obama Wins . . . Conservatives Panicked, Pessimistic

At a Halloween-day rally for John McCain in Columbus, Ohio, ANP asked McCain supporters a simple question: If Barack Obama is elected president, what will it say about America? One woman, who claims that Obama wants to change the flag and the national anthem, demonstrates the lasting power of a debunked anti-Obama chain e-mail. Produced in collaboration with Patricia Foulkrod, director of The Ground Truth.

Chaos Looms Over Pennsylvania Vote

Philadelphia is shaping up to be a key city in a key battleground state in this election, but machine problems and long lines may plague the polling stations and voter disenfranchisement will be a serious risk. Unfortunately for voters, the people charged with running a smooth election in Philly seem surprisingly unconcerned. Philly's veritable election czar, Marge Tartaglione (D), in particular, shocked ANP with her comments at a recent hearing. See more videos at the American News Project.

ANP has been investigating the perplexing case of the Philadelphia City Commission for a few weeks.

Long View: Deer Hunting With Jesus

ANP traveled to rural Virginia to talk to author Joe Bageant. His highly-acclaimed recent book, Deer Hunting With Jesus, was lauded by one reviewer as a "raging, hilarious, and profane love song to the great American redneck."

Voters Sue Pennsylvania, Election Official Scoffs

Earlier this week, ANP reported that, come November, Pennsylvania voters could face substantial delays at the polls. We spoke with the man running the election in Philadelphia, who scoffed at long lines and tales of lost votes. Now, voters are suing the state of Pennsylvania. With the help of Voter Action and the NAACP, they filed a complaint this morning in Philadelphia federal court, specifically citing an interview between the American News Project and Philadelphia Deputy City Commissioner Fred Voigt. Here's an update and more of our interview with Voigt.

Philly Official Scoffs at Voting Problems

Even after plenty of forewarning, it seems like battleground state Pennsylvania's upcoming election could be a disaster waiting to happen. But the man who is heading up Election Day preparations scoffed at these problems. In fact, he shared many startling opinions with ANP.

Foreclosed Home Front: One Mother’s Struggle

Today Jocelyn Voltaire will lose her home . . . unless bloggers and activists can intervene.  On Wednesday, ANP reported on the economic plight of people in Hempstead, NY, the location of the third and final presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain.  Jocelyn's story in particular inspired an outpouring of support on the web.   Jocelyn fell victim to a predatory loan that ANP has traced back to Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street firm whose CEO, Lloyd Blankfein, made over $70 million last year.  We will continue following this story.

No Debate: Hempstead is Struggling

Today a horde of journalists descends on Hempstead, NY, to cover the third and final presidential debate. ANP left the pack to hear from people outside of the media spotlight, people hit hard by our nation's crises at home and abroad.
